Physical Features, Demographic Profile and Water Resources

1. Physical Features

Meenachil is one of the most fertile taluks in Kottayam District. Pala is the headquarters and an important urban centre of the scenic and resource-rich Meenachil Taluk and Revenue Division.

Pala is situated as a municipal urban area surrounded by Bharananganam, Meenachil, Mutholy and Karoor Grama Panchayats. The town is naturally divided into the northern and southern banks by the Meenachil River, which originates in the Kudayathoor hill ranges, flows from east to west and ultimately reaches the Vembanad Lake.

The Lalam Thodu, which flows from the northern side and joins the Meenachil River at the heart of Pala, is another important geographical feature of the town. Other streams and waterways, including Puliyannoor Thodu, Lalam Thodu, Munnadi Thodu and Edappadi Thodu, naturally connect the Municipality with the surrounding panchayats.

Approximately 4.56 kilometres of the Meenachil River flows through the Pala municipal area. During the monsoon, the river carries a strong and muddy flow, while during other seasons its water level varies considerably, with the river sometimes flowing close to its banks and at other times carrying relatively shallow, clear water.

The Meenachil River and Lalam Thodu naturally divide the municipal area into different geographical zones. Puthenpallikkunnu is located in the north-western part, Kaveekunnu in the north-eastern part and Kannadiyurumbukunnu in the south-eastern part of the town.

The direction of flow of the Meenachil River indicates that the eastern areas along the river are comparatively higher, while the western areas are lower. Similarly, the flow of Lalam Thodu from the northern boundary indicates that the northern areas are situated at a relatively higher elevation than the central part of the town.

Bridges and waterways play an important role in connecting different parts of Pala. Lalam Bridge provides connectivity between areas on the northern side, while the Large Bridge across the Meenachil River connects the northern and southern sides of the town.

Geographical Location

Pala Municipality is situated approximately at 9°46' North latitude and 76°38' East longitude. Pala occupies an important central position in the north-eastern part of Kottayam District.

Based on its physical characteristics, the municipal area can broadly be identified through different landform zones, including elevated hills, hill slopes, moderate slopes, level areas, low-lying flood-prone areas and riverine areas that may become sandy stretches during the dry season.

Climate and Soil

The climate of Pala is generally pleasant. Temperatures normally range approximately between 21°C and 32°C. Like other parts of Kerala, the area receives both the southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon. The average annual rainfall is approximately 2,840 mm.

The municipal area has different types of soil, including fertile loamy soil, laterite-rich soil and various soil formations found on rocky hill slopes. The quantity of alluvial soil deposited along the river during floods has declined due to changes in agricultural practices in the eastern hill regions.

Approximately 726 hectares, representing about 46 per cent of the total municipal area, is associated with rubber cultivation. Rivers and other water bodies account for approximately 6 per cent of the area.

The total geographical area of Pala Municipality is 16.063 square kilometres.

Drought and River Characteristics

The Meenachil River, which was historically navigable and used as a waterway, is no longer suitable for significant water transport. During the dry season, prolonged drought conditions lead to a reduction in the groundwater level, and several wells along both banks of the river may dry up.

The severe drought of 1983 was a significant event highlighting the seriousness of water scarcity in the Pala region. During certain periods of summer, residents may face difficulties in obtaining sufficient water even for drinking purposes.

2. Demographic Profile

According to the 2011 Census, the population of Pala Municipality was 22,056, comprising 10,760 males and 11,296 females. The literacy rate of the municipal area is approximately 96 per cent.

Pala has a comparatively strong educational profile. Along with higher education, increasing importance is being given to vocational education, skill development and employment-oriented education.

However, employment opportunities for educated youth remain a challenge. The agricultural sector, particularly plantation-based agriculture, has undergone significant changes due to various socio-economic factors. Shortages of agricultural labour and difficulties in obtaining workers at reasonable wages are among the challenges affecting the agricultural sector.

As a result, the movement of workers from other States has increased. Pala and its surrounding areas have emerged as important employment destinations for interstate migrant workers.

Education, employment opportunities and globalisation have brought changes in people's dress, lifestyle and social practices. A considerable number of educated young people from the region work abroad and contribute to the economic and social development of their families.

One of the important characteristics of Pala is its tradition of social harmony among people belonging to different religious communities. Christians, Hindus and Muslims live together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and social cooperation.

The Jubilee celebration at the Pala Town Chapel and the festival at the Lalam Mahadeva Temple are examples of local celebrations in which people from different communities participate. Such celebrations reflect the social unity, cultural interaction and communal harmony of Pala.

3. Water Resources

The Meenachil River, its tributaries, streams and other water sources play a vital role in the physical environment and daily life of the people of Pala Municipality.

The average annual rainfall in Pala is approximately 2,840 mm. The highest rainfall is generally received during June and July, while rainfall is comparatively low during February and March.

The Meenachil River flows through the central part of the municipal area. Lalam Thodu joins the Meenachil River at the heart of the town.

Drinking Water Supply

The municipal water supply system primarily draws water from the Meenachil River. Although piped water supply is available to most households, private wells continue to serve as important supplementary sources of water.

The municipal area has approximately:

  • Bore wells constructed during drought periods: 6

  • Bore wells currently functional: 1

The river and streams are used for various purposes. Bathing ghats are available at certain locations, including private ghats associated with temples and other institutions.

4. Water Scarcity and Water Pollution

March and April generally experience greater water scarcity. During the summer months, declining water levels in the river and streams can affect the availability of water for drinking and other domestic purposes.

When the flow of the Meenachil River and its streams decreases, liquid waste and solid waste discharged through urban drainage systems can enter these water bodies and contribute to water pollution.

During periods of low flow, the reduced dilution capacity of the water bodies may increase the concentration of pollutants and adversely affect water quality. Therefore, effective waste management, proper maintenance of drainage systems and protection of water resources are essential.

5. Future Potential for Water Resource Development

Ensuring a reliable and sustainable drinking water supply for Pala requires not only the protection of existing water resources but also the identification and development of additional sources.

A scientific and integrated water-resource management system based on the Meenachil River could be developed to ensure adequate availability of safe drinking water for residents as well as the large number of people who visit and depend on Pala for commercial, educational, healthcare and other services.

Appropriate water-storage structures such as check dams and small reservoirs may be considered based on scientific studies and environmental assessments. Promotion of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge can also contribute significantly to reducing seasonal water scarcity.

The following measures may be given priority to ensure adequate and safe water availability:

  • Protection and conservation of the Meenachil River and its water sources

  • Rainwater harvesting

  • Groundwater recharge

  • Development of additional drinking water sources

  • Improvement of the efficiency of the municipal water distribution network

  • Reduction of water leakage and distribution losses

  • Prevention of water pollution

  • Conservation of streams, riverbanks and other water bodies

6. Rainwater and Urban Water Management

Heavy rainfall during the northeast monsoon and periods of intense southwest monsoon rainfall contribute to the natural cleaning and flushing of streets, drains and roads and facilitate the movement of rainwater through the urban drainage system.

However, a significant proportion of roads and other urban surfaces are paved or otherwise have limited water-permeability. As a result, a large share of rainfall runs off as surface water and eventually reaches the Meenachil River and other water bodies.

Areas with soil capable of absorbing water generally experience less surface water accumulation. However, increasing urbanisation and the expansion of paved surfaces can reduce the natural infiltration capacity of the land and increase surface runoff.

Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on rainwater harvesting, permeable surfaces, improved storm-water drainage, groundwater recharge, protection of natural drainage channels and conservation of water bodies.

These measures can contribute to long-term water security, reduction of urban flooding and sustainable management of Pala's water resources.

7. Conclusion

The physical geography, demographic characteristics and water resources of Pala Municipality are closely interconnected. The Meenachil River and its associated streams have historically shaped the settlement pattern, economy, environment and social life of the town.

The Municipality's future development therefore requires a balanced approach that combines urban infrastructure development with conservation of rivers, streams, groundwater and other natural resources.

Sustainable water management, effective waste management, rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, protection of water bodies and improved public participation can play a vital role in ensuring the long-term environmental sustainability and water security of Pala Municipality.
